Bluetooth Channel Sounding in 2026: Accurate Ranging for Industrial Asset Tracking

Industrial location projects do not always need a continuous dot on a map. Often the real question is simpler: Is the correct tool close to this workstation? Is an authorised device within a safe operating distance? Which tagged asset is nearest to the technician? Bluetooth Channel Sounding introduces accurate distance awareness that can help answer these questions.

What Channel Sounding does

Bluetooth Channel Sounding is a secure fine-ranging feature for compatible Bluetooth devices. It combines phase-based ranging (PBR) with round-trip time (RTT). PBR measures phase differences across multiple frequencies to estimate distance accurately. RTT provides an independent distance-bounding check and helps reduce exposure to sophisticated relay attacks.

The Bluetooth SIG describes centimetre-level accuracy, with early implementations reporting approximately ±20 cm. Under favourable power and environmental conditions, measurements may reach much longer distances, but real industrial performance will depend on hardware, antenna design, obstructions, reflections, installation and the ranging algorithm.

Where precise ranging pays off

  • Tool and asset retrieval: guide a worker toward the correct nearby item instead of only showing that it is somewhere in a broad zone.
  • Safe human-machine interaction: confirm that an authorised controller is within an intended operating distance.
  • Secure access: add distance awareness to locks, cabinets or equipment access workflows.
  • Proximity-based automation: trigger a workflow when a compatible device approaches a defined point.
  • Hybrid location systems: use lower-cost presence detection at longer distance, then switch to precise ranging near the target.

Channel Sounding is not a universal replacement

Each identification and positioning technology solves a different problem. Barcode provides deliberate line-of-sight confirmation. RAIN RFID is strong for rapid item-level inventory and portal reads. Bluetooth RSSI can indicate general proximity at low complexity. Direction Finding adds angle information. UWB can provide precise real-time location in appropriate designs. Channel Sounding is compelling when Bluetooth compatibility and accurate device-to-device distance are central requirements.

A pilot should therefore start with the required decision, not the radio feature. Define the maximum tolerable distance error, update rate, battery life, installation density, device cost, security model and behaviour around metal, liquids and moving machinery.

Five questions before a pilot

  1. Does the workflow need distance, direction or full coordinates? These are different outputs and may require different infrastructure.
  2. Are both endpoints compatible? Channel Sounding introduces capabilities that may require newer Bluetooth LE hardware and software.
  3. What happens when ranging is uncertain? Define a safe fallback instead of treating every measurement as absolute.
  4. How will devices be provisioned and maintained? Battery replacement, firmware, identity and security ownership matter at scale.
  5. Which operational KPI will prove value? Measure retrieval time, search incidents, unsafe activations or another business outcome.

Design for the real facility

Industrial radio environments are rarely clean. Steel racks, enclosures, motors, people and changing inventory affect propagation. Test at different heights and orientations, during busy shifts, and in the exact zones where decisions will be made. Record the distribution of errors rather than reporting one best-case number.

A useful addition to the identification toolkit

Channel Sounding expands the choices available for industrial asset visibility. The best result may be a hybrid architecture combining barcode, RFID and Bluetooth according to the process. LENASYS can help assess the use case, select capture points and design a pilot around measurable operational outcomes.
